(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Costa Rica has expressed interest in drawing on Ukraine’s experience in the security sector, as the two countries move towards arranging a meeting at the level of heads of state.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with Costa Rican President Laura Fernández Delgado. The two leaders agreed that their teams would begin work on a possible format for a leaders’ level meeting.

Zelenskyy thanked Fernández Delgado for what he described as warm and important words of support for Ukraine and its people. He noted that Costa Rica has stood with Ukraine during votes on resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly, in efforts to return Ukrainian children taken by Russia, and in pursuing accountability for Russian crimes, including the crime of aggression.

The discussion covered possible areas of cooperation between the two nations. Both sides see potential for partnership across a range of fields. Costa Rica indicated a particular interest in Ukraine’s security sector experience.

Zelenskyy invited Fernández Delgado to visit Ukraine. The Costa Rican president in turn invited Zelenskyy to visit Costa Rica.
