(LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA) – “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has shattered North American box office records, crossing $500 million in its first seven days and becoming the fastest film to reach the half billion dollar mark in U.S. and Canadian theatres.
Sony Pictures announced Thursday that the film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton had achieved the highest first week gross in the history of the U.S. box office. The Tom Holland led feature overtook “Avengers: Endgame,” which reached the $500 million milestone eight days after its April 2019 premiere.
The production budget for “Brand New Day” stands at $225 million. The film was produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal. It stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo alongside Holland. Cretton previously directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
The picture has been setting records at a dizzying pace. Sony confirmed it achieved the best Monday and Tuesday grosses in U.S. box office history. By Tuesday morning, the studio announced that “Brand New Day” had surpassed $1 billion worldwide in six days, making it the second fastest film to cross that threshold, trailing only “Endgame.”
Over its opening weekend, “Brand New Day” went head to head with “Endgame” for the title of the highest grossing opening weekend in U.S. box office history. On Monday morning, Sony confirmed “Spider-Man” had claimed the crown with $360 million, surpassing “Endgame’s” $357.1 million. However, “Endgame’s” $1.2 billion global opening still holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend worldwide.
“Brand New Day” also set records for the biggest Thursday previews and the highest Friday gross, while delivering Sony its best opening weekend. The Marvel Comics story sees the hero existing alone without his loved ones before an unseen enemy tracks him down.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter that audience interest in Holland and Zendaya appears not to be a fleeting trend. “They are popular not because they are popular. They are popular because they are talented, and they deserve their popularity. They are wonderful, decent, sensible, respected people, and they work very hard. So they have earned every drop of their success.”
Sony projects that “Brand New Day” will continue to attract audiences in the coming weeks as the end of summer approaches.
In its opening weekend, the adventure film based on Marvel comics grossed $355 million across 4,487 North American theatres, according to data cited by Variety. This represented the second largest debut in U.S. box office history at the time, behind only “Avengers: Endgame” with $357 million, not adjusted for inflation.
No other film has come close to the $300 million mark in a single weekend. The third largest domestic opening weekend belongs to 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with $260 million, followed by 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” with $257 million. Marvel Studios now holds the four biggest domestic debuts of all time in the U.S.
“Brand New Day” grossed $573 million internationally in its first weekend, bringing its total to $927 million worldwide. This became the second largest global debut after “Avengers: Endgame,” which grossed $1.2 billion in its opening weekend.
The film holds a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore from exit polls. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the debut “reflects the enduring power of Marvel characters and the connection they continue to maintain with fans worldwide — and, as audiences have seen, it sets us up for exciting events.”
Despite the buzz around “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” remained appealing, grossing $51 million in its third weekend. Together, the two films made for the biggest overall weekend in box office history, with roughly $430 million grossed across all films. The previous record was held by the “Avengers: Endgame” weekend with $402 million total, followed by “Avengers: Infinity War” with $314 million total.
The fourth Spider-Man instalment received its title “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” ahead of production. Filming began in summer 2025, with a premiere date set for 31 July 2026. Tom Holland shared exclusive photos from the set on his Instagram account. American actor Jon Bernthal, who appeared in several Marvel series as the Punisher, joined the cast. This will be the final Spider-Man film from the Sony and Marvel partnership.
