(LONDON, UK) – Global crude oil prices advanced sharply during early week trading after Tehran formally stated it was not engaged in diplomatic talks with Washington and presented a set of conditions for the resumption of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, moved up by roughly 1.2 per cent to reach $84.58 per barrel. The equivalent price in sterling stands at about £66.55, while in euro terms it is near €77.48. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate, the main United States crude grade, rose by around 1.1 per cent to settle at $79.28 per barrel. That translates to approximately £62.38 in sterling and €72.61 in euros.

The upward pressure on prices followed statements from Iranian officials confirming that no dialogue was under way with the United States. Alongside this denial, a detailed list of demands was put forward that Tehran insists must be met before it will allow normal shipping operations to resume in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling a large share of global oil tanker traffic.

Supply concerns deepened as traders assessed the wider impact of disruptions across the region’s key maritime chokepoints. Market analysts pointed out that the delay in oil deliveries was made more severe by the effective closure of the Bab el Mandeb Strait. That waterway, which links the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean with the Red Sea, has been largely blocked by attacks from Houthi forces backed by Iran. The combined effect of restricted passage through both straits has tightened the supply outlook considerably.

The developments come against a backdrop of broader geopolitical manoeuvring involving energy supplies. In a related matter, Syria has informed the United States that it stands ready to cut its imports of Russian oil significantly as part of ongoing discussions aimed at lifting key American sanctions.

With no immediate resolution in sight, shipping insurers and freight operators continued to reassess risk exposure along vital Middle Eastern maritime routes.
