(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Ukraine and Algeria are working to expand agricultural trade cooperation, with discussions focused on wheat supplies, dairy exports and possible access for Ukrainian meat products to the Algerian market.
The talks were held between Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotskyi and Algeria’s Ambassador to Ukraine and Moldova Ahmed Ouail. The meeting focused on strengthening trade links between the two countries and improving opportunities for Ukrainian agricultural exporters.
Wheat supplies were among the main issues discussed, with Ukraine seeking to maintain reliable deliveries to Algeria despite growing challenges affecting maritime transport.
Vysotskyi informed the Algerian side that shipping conditions have become more difficult due to increased attacks on commercial vessels and port infrastructure around Odesa. Ukraine is working on alternative transport routes while seeking to restore full operations of its maritime export corridor.
The minister said wheat remains important for global food security and that Ukraine will continue efforts to maintain stable supplies and honour existing trade agreements. Ukraine remains one of the world’s major agricultural exporters, supplying grain and food products to international markets.
The two sides also discussed preparations for an inspection of a Ukrainian dried milk production facility. Ukraine confirmed it is ready to host an Algerian inspection mission and provide the necessary conditions for the assessment.
Following the inspection, both countries could move towards practical arrangements for exporting Ukrainian dried milk products to Algeria, creating another opportunity for agricultural businesses in both markets.
The meeting also covered possible access for Ukrainian meat products, including poultry and processed poultry goods, to the Algerian market.
Ukraine has already submitted a request to Algerian authorities seeking information about import requirements, approval procedures and veterinary certification rules needed for Ukrainian producers to enter the market.
The two countries agreed to continue coordination between relevant government agencies and work towards expanding bilateral agricultural trade.
Agricultural cooperation with Algeria is part of Ukraine’s wider effort to diversify export destinations and reduce dependence on traditional markets. North African countries remain important buyers of grain and other food products due to their significant demand for imported agricultural goods.
The discussions come as Ukraine continues to face pressure on its export logistics because of security risks affecting Black Sea shipping routes. Maintaining access to international markets remains a key priority for Ukraine’s agricultural sector, which provides significant export revenue and supports millions of jobs.
Ukraine’s agricultural exports are also being monitored by neighbouring trade partners. Turkey announced that from 4 August 2026 it will strengthen phytosanitary controls on imports, exports, reexports and transit of plant products, including wheat from Ukraine.
