Russian Strikes Cut Power in Five Ukrainian Regions

(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Russian drone strikes and artillery shelling caused fresh power cuts in five Ukrainian regions by the morning of 12 August, national grid operator Ukrenergo said, as repair crews worked to restore supply where security conditions allowed.

The new outages affected consumers in the Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kherson and Kharkiv regions, Ukrenergo said in a statement on its Facebook page. Emergency restoration work was under way in areas where the security situation permitted access for repair teams.

Overall electricity consumption in Ukraine showed a downward trend. As of 09:30 on 12 August, consumption was 3.3 percent lower than at the same time the previous day, a Tuesday. The decline was attributed to cooling temperatures across most regions, which reduced demand for air conditioning.

The daily consumption peak on 11 August was recorded in the evening. It was 2.5 percent higher than the peak registered a day earlier, on Monday 10 August. Ukrenergo said the increase was caused by a significant rise in air temperatures across most regions.

Ukrenergo urged consumers to shift heavy electricity use to the period of highest output from industrial solar power plants, between 10:00 and 17:00. It also called on households and businesses to limit the use of high powered electrical appliances during the evening hours from 19:00 to 22:00.

In the Odesa region, the grid operator said there remained a need for careful electricity consumption throughout the entire day. No scheduled consumption limits were planned across Ukraine for 12 August.
