Ukraine and IAEA Hold Talks on Nuclear Safety Reinforcement

(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency have held talks on further coordination for the independent assessment of risks and the condition of critical energy infrastructure, alongside developing additional measures to strengthen nuclear safety in Ukraine.

First Vice Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal held an online conversation with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the Energy Ministry reported. The two sides discussed ongoing cooperation on evaluating risks to energy facilities and working out extra steps to reinforce nuclear security.

Shmyhal thanked the IAEA for its continued support of Ukraine and for the work of the agency’s experts at Ukrainian energy sites. He also expressed gratitude for the implementation of initiatives supporting Ukrainian nuclear energy workers and their families.

The IAEA has recently completed its eighth monitoring mission to key substations operated by the national grid company Ukrenergo. These substations supply power for the internal needs of nuclear power plants and transmit electricity generated by them to the Unified Energy System of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that no power plant in Ukraine remains undamaged.
