(KYIV) – The National Bank of Ukraine issued a new commemorative coin on 29 July dedicated to the Sea Baby maritime drone, the latest addition to a series honouring Ukrainian defence technology breakthroughs.
The coin, with a face value of 5 hryvnias (approximately $0.12, £0.10, €0.11), features the uncrewed surface vessel developed by specialists at the Security Service of Ukraine for combat missions in the Black Sea. It entered circulation on Tuesday, the central bank said in a statement.
The Sea Baby first appeared in 2022 and has since become one of the most recognised examples of Ukrainian innovation in uncrewed technology. Its modular design allows the drone to be fitted with different weaponry depending on the mission, enabling tasks to be carried out without risk to Ukrainian military personnel. The vessel can destroy enemy targets with explosives, lay mines remotely, strike coastal infrastructure and return fire against air, surface or land based strategic targets.
The National Bank noted that the Sea Baby was responsible for operations against the Crimean Bridge and inflicted damage on several Russian vessels of the Black Sea Fleet.
The commemorative coin continues a series devoted to Ukrainian defence technologies and their designers. The central bank said Ukrainian engineers have shown the world that the country’s engineering expertise can prevail and fundamentally change approaches to warfare.
The obverse of the coin depicts a stylised trident flowing into an image of the Sea Baby drone in motion. The reverse shows the drone cutting through Black Sea waves, with the Security Service of Ukraine logo above and the inscription SEA BABY below, rendered in stencil style military marking. The letter Y is stylised as a Victory hand gesture.
The mintage is set at up to 75,000 units in souvenir packaging. Sales will begin on 30 July through the central bank’s online numismatic shop and distributor banks.
The National Bank previously issued a coin honouring those executed or killed in captivity.
