(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Ukraine will increase its electricity transmission tariff by about 25% from 1 August 2026 after the national energy regulator approved higher charges for the country’s electricity transmission network. The move is expected to provide additional funding for the national grid operator and support renewable electricity producers under the country’s public service obligations.
The decision was approved by the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities, known as NKREKP, following amendments to Ukrainian legislation that removed legal barriers preventing the regulator from including public service obligation costs in the transmission tariff.
According to energy consultancy ExPro, the new transmission tariff for most users of the electricity transmission system will be UAH 928.45 per megawatt hour, excluding VAT. This is approximately US$22.30, £16.70 and €19.30 per megawatt hour at current exchange rates. The new tariff represents an increase of about 25% from the current level.
For companies operating in the green electrometallurgy sector, the transmission tariff will increase to UAH 563.26 per megawatt hour, excluding VAT. This is equivalent to about US$13.50, £10.10 and €11.70 per megawatt hour. The revised rate is almost 49% higher than the previous tariff.
The new pricing structure includes a UAH 365.19 per megawatt hour public service obligation component, equal to about US$8.80, £6.60 and €7.60. The funding will be used to support electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
The total cost allocated to public service obligations within the tariff amounts to UAH 32.52 billion, equivalent to approximately US$781 million, £581 million and €676 million. Of this amount, UAH 19.69 billion, or about US$473 million, £352 million and €409 million, has been allocated to support renewable electricity producers, excluding private households.
The regulator said the tariff revision became possible after Parliament passed legislation resolving a legal conflict over the inclusion of public service obligation costs within electricity transmission charges.
The legislative amendments formed part of a wider law supporting the development of efficient and sustainable district heating systems. The legislation was later signed into law by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Because of the previous legal restrictions, the regulator was unable to introduce the revised tariff on 1 July 2026, even though a draft decision had been approved in May. Following the law’s entry into force, the regulator was able to approve implementation from 1 August.
President Zelensky signed the legislation supporting efficient and sustainable district heating on 24 July 2026, completing the legal process required for the tariff revision.
The previous electricity transmission tariff of UAH 742.91 per megawatt hour, excluding VAT, has been in effect since 1 January 2026. This is equivalent to approximately US$17.80, £13.40 and €15.40 per megawatt hour.
The revised tariff is expected to strengthen the financial position of Ukraine’s electricity transmission system while maintaining support for renewable energy generation as the country continues to modernise its energy sector and align its electricity market with European standards.
